Despite our increasing love for technology, one thing that seemingly never goes out of style is a good pen. While electronic gadgets are relied upon more and more heavily for keeping us organized and ever-connected, there is something inherently reassuring about a stalwart device such as a good ballpoint. Pair with a journal or a folio; traditional stationery is still a much-appreciated, ever-useful gift. Given that people are constantly grabbing free pens from grocery stores, banks, and restaurants, it stands to reason that this is one promotional item that stands the test of time, and will ensure that your brand stays in your customers’ purses and pockets.

According to the Advertising Specialty Institute1, over 50% of all consumers own at least one branded, promotional writing instrument. This means that in a given household, promotional writing devices have a one in two chance of maintaining a prominent spot. Given that pens continue to be a promotional item of choice, and impressions by way of pens cost mere pennies, it’s easy to see why writing instruments are a key way to leave your promotional mark.

So what are some creative ways to use promotional pens?

Give pens away to show your appreciation

    • From a consumer psychology perspective, people like free stuff. Not only are your clients more inclined to buy things that are given away for free2, but research has shown that items thrown in as “bonus” items with purchases incentivize customers to purchase the product on its own3. Studies have also demonstrated that the distribution of “free” products primes our pleasure centers4, encouraging consumers to indulge, thus making larger, more expensive purchases. By associating pens (and thus your brand) as a giveaway item, your brand is actively tied to the pleasure centers of the brain, linking purchasing your brand to a pleasurable behaviour!

Pair with branded paper products, portfolios, padfolios and journals

    • Pens stand alone, but are particularly useful when paired with chic paper products. For executive clients, this can include stylish products like luxefaux leather padfolios which can also be branded with your company’s logo. Not only are these great client gifts, but they can also be handed out amongst employees to utilize both in and out of the office.

Go digital!

    • Take a non-traditional approach to ensuring that your pen is always on hand!  Think outside the box, and utilize a pen with a digital stylus. Not just for your traditional pen lover, a stylus pen will also be favoured by your tech-savvy clients. This will ensure that customers and employees reach for your pen as their tool of choice whether they are brainstorming on paper, on their phones, or using a digital notebook. With many stylus-outfitted pens being utilized across a variety of hardware platforms, taking an updated approach to the once traditional ballpoint will encourage people to keep your brand “handy”.
